What does COB mean on LED Grow Lights?

What are Chip-on-Board (“COB”) LEDs?
Chip-on-Board or "COB" refers to the mounting of a bare LED chip in direct contact with a substrate (such as silicon carbide or sapphire) to produce LED arrays. COB LEDs have a number of advantages over older LED technologies, such as Surface Mounted Device ("SMD") LEDs or Dual In-line Package ("DIP") LEDs.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING COB LED LIGHTS?
One of the biggest advantages of COB grow lights is that they are much more efficient than other types of marijuana grow lights. Including HPS grow lights, ceramic metal halide, and fluorescent lighting. The efficiency of these lights is measured in umol/j units,. This represents the amount of photosynthetically active protons produced by the lights. While COB LED grow lights produce 1.8 - 2.5 umol/j, other grow lights produce far less than this. Double-ended HPS lights will only produce 1.4 - 1.8 umol/j. While fluorescents will produce a measly 0.6 - 1.1 umol/j.

The longest lifespan among all lighting alternatives belonged to High Pressure Sodium products. They are able to last between 9.000 and 17.000 hours, which isn’t bad at all. But, COB LEDs can last between 30.000 and 60.000 hours, so the benefit or better said advantage here is obvious. Even the low-end COB lights will last 3 times longer than any other type of lighting.

The difference between COB LED and traditional SMD LEDs:

  • The COBs are not as bulky as SMDs even with the same lumen density.
  • COBs produce less heat than SMDs as they have fewer components and the heat dissipation system is more effective.
  • SMDs allow you to change the color of the light while COB only produces a single color light (white).
  • Better light distribution and coverage by SMDs.
  • SMDs penetrate better than the COB LED light.

Another product that embraces the Cree 3590 grow light, the CANAGROW Cree CXB3590 COB LED Grow Light is a full spectrum, 200W option with a dimmable power switch. It also features low noise fans, so you shouldn’t be distracted by unexpected sounds.

In comparison to some higher wattage options, this Cree LED grow light is also fairly compact. There is the option to daisy chain two of these lights together if you need more coverage than a single light can provide. However, it can support up to 70 square feet, so you may find that sufficient.

Eco Farm 450W CREE CXB3590 COB LED Grow Light

This CXB3590 grow light is equivalent to a 280-300W LED grow lights. According to the manufacturer, it matches a 600-800 watt HPS Grow light, though it is more like half that. It is a full spectrum grow light, though it is weaker on ultraviolet light than expected. It puts out less UVA and UVB than some of its competitors, though this doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a red light. You can use this grow light for seedlings, leafy greens or fruiting plants.

In Conclusion
If you are interested in getting started with indoor growing or if you have been growing indoors for some time already, you will want to ensure you are using the best equipment to yield the results you are looking for. This means that you should consider which are the best COB LED grow lights to use for your particular space and how each will affect your plant development.
