Grow Tent Getting Too Hot? – A Comprehensive Guide

Getting the temperature right in your grow room is extremely important as a grower because it affects your plant's ability to photosynthesize and grow.

Photosynthesis is comprised of a variety of processes that are either light-dependent or light-independent. Temperature affects the light-independent process of photosynthesis, either increasing or decreasing the rate of photosynthesis.

In general cannabis plants grow best at temperatures between 20–30°C (70–85°F) during the day. Growers tend to agree that the ideal temperature is around 25°C (or roughly 75°F). At night, cannabis plants like slightly cooler temperatures of roughly 17-20°C (62-68°F).

Hot Grow Room?
Unlike colder temperatures, it would take a lot for a cannabis plant to die purely from an overheated marijuana grow tent. However, too much warmth can have a serious impact on the length of time it takes to grow your plants.

During the flowering stage of the cultivation process, you must ensure that your grow room temperature does not exceed 75°F. Temperatures exceeding this can do irreparable damage to the potency, smell and taste of your plants. If you want to guarantee that your grow reaches its full potential, keeping an eye on the temperature during flowering stage is essential.

A overheated cannabis grow tent can also lead to a number of other problems with your plants. Firstly, nutrient burn can occur through increased water transpiration at high temperatures. Mildew can also appear, especially if the room becomes too humid. Terpenes can also disappear from your plants if they are overheated, which removes those classic flavours and aromas from your strains.

1. Correct intake and outtake fans
Air flow is vitally important especially when constructing a grow room. Grow tent fan size will depend on the size of your room or grow tent.

2. Ducting
Keep all ducting as straight and short as possible. You want a short direct line to the window so that hot air is immediately vented outside. Try to avoid using anything in the window that restricts airflow. Though it’s often necessary to use some type of screen to make sure no one can see in, try to do the best you can to obstruct airflow as little as possible.

3. Air Conditioning
The temperature of your air is as important as having good clean air. Trying to establish the correct growing environment can literally cost you lots of time, money and stress you out. But having a air con unit (unit will again depend on the size of your grow room) can help you immensely. Something else to consider is whether a one piece unit or two piece air conditioning unit is needed.

4. Keep Roots Cool
Your plant is much more resistant to heat if the roots don’t cook too, whether you’re growing in a grow pot or in a hydroponic reservoir. If you can find a way to help keep the roots around 70°F (21°C), your plant will suffer less and recover more quickly from a hot spell!

5. Have A Low-Strength Nutrient Solution
A hot temperature induces more water through the leaves, resulting in a higher consumption of water of roots. Which forces them to intake more nutrients whatsoever.

And a higher consumption of nutrients come with a risk of toxicity issues of plants. Which eventually leads them to death.

Not to let it happen, dilute the nutrient solution by a certain percentage(20% in most cases). Adding the measured amount of pure water is all you need to do.  The keep the solution consumable, keep it well-agitated by adding an air pump and some air stones in it.

6. Use a Cooling Humidifier
The usage of a humidifier for grow room with a cooling effect, such as Vick's Cool Mist Ultrasonic inside your grow tent will help to reduce temperatures even further, while increasing the humidity to appropriate levels. However, you will want to be careful not to let the humidity get too high - which can inadvertently increase temperatures. For vegetative marijuana plants, a humidity level of around 40% is considered ideal - whereas seedlings will benefit from much higher humidity levels.

7. Using a Container of Water or Ice
This is a traditional method of regulating the temperature in a grow tent. This involves creating a heat sink that will suck away the heat, causing the weak growth of the plants.

The cold water or ice is placed inside a bucket and positioned where it can absorb the heat. This provides a controlled humidity level as well as reducing heat in the tent.

Growing in summer can be a challenge. Especially so for those grows closer to the equator. A common sense, passive setup with mechanical intervention when necessary makes summertime growing drama-free.

You might feel it in the hip pocket to start with, but it will balance out over the life of the equipment. The investment is relative to multiple crops over a number of years. Smelly, fat, home-grown buds have a mystique all their own. No matter the season, they are always worth it. Happy summer growing.
